For the study, relevant data was collected from the banks’ annual reports, financial websites, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE) from 2008 to 2018. We hypothesize that when firms increase spending on CSR activities, their financial performance is enhanced as a result and that corporate governance represents one of the channels through which corporate social responsibility influences firm performance. Despite the intensive research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and firm financial performance, little is known about how the linkage between CSR and firm financial performance is heterogeneous across industries and how the performance implications are differentiated among specific categories of CSR activities.
